Back in Time..

After driving up the dike, you'll immediately notice that the holiday park is located in a beautiful and unique part of North Holland... The Proefpolder.

This polder was created between 1926 and 1927 in the (then) Zuiderzee, as an experiment for the reclamation and cultivation of the later IJsselmeer polders. The engineers wanted to first "practice" large-scale reclamation with a small section of the Zuiderzee near Andijk. They wanted to understand how the land in a drained polder would develop and how the salty soil could be made suitable for agriculture. The project began in 1926, and by August 27, 1927, the experimental polder of forty hectares had been drained. The total cost of the project was around one million guilders, a significant amount for that time.

After the polder was drained, construction began on a farm and laboratories for agricultural and soil research.

Here, various aspects important for optimal land use were studied, such as desalination, subsidence, and drying. Research was also conducted on the best methods of soil cultivation and the choice of suitable crops. By 1929, the land had been improved enough for agriculture to be possible. After this research phase, the experimental polder became the domain of farmers from Andijk, and cauliflower thrived there.

Eventually, the area was given a recreational purpose. For many years now, safely surrounded by dikes, you will find the holiday park Het Grootslag.
