Everyone recognizes common birds like magpies, house sparrows, great tits, herons, or seagulls. But have you ever witnessed a courting harrier? Or seen a kingfisher up close? Our water-rich West Friesland is a true paradise for birdwatchers.
Vogeleiland de Kreupel: A Hidden Birdwatching Gem
One of the most unique places to spot rare birds is Vogeleiland de Kreupel. From Andijk, on clear days, you can see this natural island in the IJsselmeer. Located about 4 kilometers north of Andijk, it was created in 2004.
The Kreupel Island is approximately 1500 meters long and 500 meters wide, consisting of around 20 hectares of bare sandbanks with a belt of shallow water and reed vegetation surrounding it. The entire nature reserve covers about 70 hectares and is managed by Staatsbosbeheer.
During its construction, around 3 million square meters of sand were used. It’s no surprise that this area is a birdwatcher’s paradise. The IJsselmeer is one of Europe’s largest waterbird habitats. The Kreupel Island was specifically designed as a resting and breeding area for birds like the black tern, little tern, and little ringed plover. In the surrounding shallow waters, various species of ducks and grebes can also be spotted.
Book a Birdwatching Day Trip
It’s possible to book a boat trip to Vogeleiland de Kreupel. These trips are only available for groups, and you can set the date in consultation with the guide. A birdwatching day trip is an excellent way to experience the local wildlife, and it can easily be combined with a stay at our park.
